Squatters on Ibiza: “We do not illegally re-rent rooms. We only share an apartment”

The neighbors of the apartment located in Via Romana 55 claim that the squatters have returned to illegally re-rent rooms | One of the tenants denies that he is committing any illegality and states that he is only looking for "people to share expenses with".

The neighbors of the squatted house at Calle Via Romana 55 in the center of Vila, denounce that the residents continue to illegally re-rent rooms of the building and that “the movement of people is continuous”. As they explain, the new tenants are a woman and her son, about two years old.

They comment, however, that the fights in the house have been mitigated and are no longer constant, but that the last argument – which led to their umpteenth call to the police – occurred a week ago. “They seem to have calmed down,” comments Virginia González, one of the neighbors, relieved because “it’s been a week since anyone broke anything.”

Residents illegally re-rent rooms

Up to four people have explained to Diario de Ibiza that they were swindled by the residents of calle Via Romana 55. All of them claim that they re-rent them rooms in cash and without a contract through an advertisement posted on a Telegram channel. They also said that they suffered real estate bullying and that when they wanted to leave the house because of the impossible coexistence with the tenants, the latter refused to return the rent deposit.

In addition, the people who re-rent rooms in the house also occasionally stay at this address, since, as if it were a game of Russian dolls, a year ago they stopped paying illegal rent to another person who, in turn, would also re-rent rooms and had rented the house to them in cash.

Yubrant’s version of the re-rented rooms

These accusations are rejected by Yubrant, the person who, in the absence of the property, is the owner of the house at Via Romana 55, and whom several people point out as the one who deceived them and kept the money from the deposit. Yubrant has wanted to offer his version of the facts to Diario de Ibiza, although he has forbidden the recording of his words. Instead, he has allowed us to write down his statements.

“The people who appeared in the Diario attacking me, I don’t know them at all,” he says, “nor is it true that I charge 20 euros for spending a night here. This has never happened. “I do what many people do on this island because of the price of housing: look for a roommate to share expenses,” explains Yubrant to justify the parade of tenants.

He assures that at the time he paid 1,500 euros in rent, but that he himself was the victim of a scam because whoever rented him the house “was not the owner of the property”. He insists that he does nothing wrong and that, if someone has complained that he has kept their money, he has always tried to fix it: “Two Argentinean friends who had paid a bond asked me to return it and I have done so”.
