2 year sentence for father who left his baby blind and quadriplegic on Ibiza

The First Section of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands has held the pre-trial hearing against a man accused of violently shaking his five-month-old baby daughter after she started crying.

The father accused of leaving his baby blind and quadriplegic on Ibiza, a crime for which the prosecution was requesting 11 years in prison, has finally reached an agreement and will be sentenced to two years in prison for a crime of reckless injury.

According to the prosecution, the suspect violently shook the girl to stop her crying. The shaking caused very serious brain injuries to the little girl and grave after-effects. Sources familiar with the case have explained that the defendant, a 22-year-old Brazilian, denies his responsibility and accuses a roommate.

The events occurred on January 24, 2020 at the home where the defendant, his partner and their daughter, a baby who was about to turn five months old, and other people with whom they shared the house lived. Around 9:30am, the baby’s mother went to work and the man was left in charge of her. An hour later, when father and daughter were in their bedroom, the child began to cry.

The accused picked her up and began to shake her roughly and violently, according to the prosecution’s indictment. The prosecution states that the father, at least, was aware that he could cause significant injuries with these shakes.

Baby left with grave injuries

The little girl ended up in hospital, where doctors found that she had suffered very serious injuries. The baby had severe brain injuries and eye hemorrhages and spent 12 days in the neonatal ICU and another 21 days on the ward.

The investigation into suspicions of abuse led to the arrest of the father on February 6, 2020. The man was released with charges the following day. Social services took action. The minor was placed under public guardianship and temporarily fostered by a family.

The victim has undergone several tests in recent months and forensic doctors have confirmed the worst prognoses. The very serious brain injuries have confirmed that the girl has been left quadriplegic and blind, according to sources close to the case.
