More than 1/2 the public charging points for electric cars on Ibiza don’t work

The Consell de Ibiza and Vila are preparing an agreement for the Balearic Energy Institute to take over the maintenance of all electric car recharging points on the island, which are currently managed and repaired by these three institutions through their own or external services.

Reports on electromobility always consider two factors: the electric car fleet and the existing recharging network. The latest report by the National Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac) places the Balearic Islands in the top five in both penetration of electric cars in the market and charging points by number of vehicles. The Autonomous Community is fourth in both indicators. It seems that the islands are on a good course set towards the European electromobility objectives; however, the existence of many recharging points does not mean that users can access them.

Of the 32 public access points within the Balearic Electric Mobility network (Melib) on Ibiza only 11 are operating at full capacity. Many of them have had only one of the two connection points available for months or have connection points listed as available but it is not possible to charge the vehicle through the mobile application. Eleven are totally inoperative.

With the gradual decline in the prices of electric cars, there are more and more users who own one without having a charging point at home. This means that they are totally dependent on public or private charging points available on the island.

Collaboration Agreement to improve electric car recharging system

The maintenance of the Melib network recharging points is currently managed by the Balearic Govern, the Consell de Ibiza and the Ibiza City Council. The Govern is in charge of the recharging points in Sant Antoni, Sant Josep, Sant Joan and Santa Eulària (23), while the Consell and City Council manage the ones in Vila.

Most of the inoperative points are among those managed by the Ibizan institutions, eight in total. A situation that is going to be a problem for the Govern in some months. Both Vila and the Consell informed that they are in the process of creating a collaboration agreement with the Balearic Energy Institute for the improvement and maintenance of the public recharging system of the Melib network.
