The Consell de Ibiza has carried out an special inspection in the ‘Colisée Sa Residència’ center for the elderly after complaints from relatives of residents, which has detected deficiencies in the operation and care of users, as reported by the institution in a statement.
The inspection was carried out by the Consell de Ibiza’s Department of Social Welfare and Human Resources on January 13th. Apparently, relatives of the elderly residing in the center went to the institution reporting in writing the conditions of the residence on the 11th of the same month.
The Consell de Ibiza exercised its duty to inspect services and social services centers assigned by Law 14/2001, of October 29th, which grants this authority in the field of social services and social security to all island councils, as reported in a note.
Hospital admissions due to anemia
Alleged negligence reported by family members included errors in resident’s medication patterns, excessive physical restraint, disconnection of buzzers, lack of coordination in the types of food, lack of hydration, and infrequent diaper changes among others. In fact, hospital admissions of inmates for anemia, dehydration and recurrent urinary tract infections have been reported according to Efe.
Relatives have assured that “they spend up to eight hours a day in the residence to meet the food and hygiene needs of their residents” and have denounced, apart from malpractice, the lack of staff and the low qualification of workers.
The families of the residents are now waiting for answers from both the Consell de Ibiza and the Govern, as well as from the company, which has committed to present them with an action plan to reverse the situation.
The Consell de Ibiza assures that it will act where necessary
The inspection file is being processed and has led to the issuing of a notice to the company to amend the deficiencies, which the Consell de Ibiza does not detail. In addition, the institution assures that it will carry out, within the scope of its powers, all appropriate actions to ensure the welfare of the elderly residing in the residence.
On the other hand, the insular institution has requested the result of the technical audit carried out to the residence from the directorate General of Dependency Care from the Govern, as well as any other action carried out in the scope of the agreements they have with the entity. All this so that they can be assessed in the file that is in process and that could lead to a disciplinary file.
For its part, the Balearic Govern issued a statement on Saturday in which it points out that the Consell de Ibiza “has the powers” and that at the time “authorized this residence” and it is the insular institution that “has the right to inspection, action and discipline”.
The Balearic Executive also indicated that the Health Department representatives have already held meetings with the relatives and that the Department of Social Affairs also contacted the relatives and a meeting was held with the company to communicate the complaints.
The Balearic Regional Ministry of Social Affairs indicated in that sense that it also has places reserved in this residence but that it has no margin for action beyond revoking the administrative agreement with the company if the inspection so determined. This would mean stopping the income and relocating the users of the concerted places in other centers.
