Nine arrested for selling laughing gas in Sant Antoni

The Local Police of Sant Antoni yesterday arrested nine people for selling nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, on the S’Arenal promenade in Sant Antoni, one of the busiest tourist spots in the municipality.

According to a press release from the City Council of Sant Antoni, the police device was composed of ten agents of the Preventive Action Group (GAP), and focused on the control of street vending and the sale of nitrous oxide. The action, which began at midnight, also included the presence of police cars for the closure of a section of the pedestrian area of the promenade.

From the consistory indicate that the detainees have been brought to court for an alleged crime against public health.

“This operation is part of one of the actions framed within the Security Plan Summer 2023, which aims to ensure the levels of coexistence, civility and security in the municipality in the face of the increase in population that occurs during the tourist season. The plan also contemplates interventions in coordination with other security forces and bodies such as the Civil Guard and the National Police”, details the note.

The City Council also points out that, since the beginning of the security plan, last May 15, the Local Police of Sant Antoni has arrested to date to a total of 49 people for the sale of laughing gas in leisure areas.

The Councilor for Citizen Security of the City Council of Sant Antoni, Neus Mateu, explains, “a great work of control and prevention is being carried out from the Local Police against the sale of nitrous oxide in the municipality.” Mateu has detailed that the interventions are focused on leisure areas, where there are larger crowds at peak hours, and that “thanks to the coordination of the regular service with the operational units are being carried out arrests of this type on a daily basis”.
