Good news for enjoying New Year’s Eve in the streets for traders and for hoteliers, who will fill their terraces on the last days of the year on Ibiza and Formentera. Temperatures will climb to 21 degrees in the Pitiusas to start the new year, with “no rainfall expected”, according to Miquel Gili, deputy spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Balearic Islands and head of forecasting, who says that the temperature this Christmas is “abnormally warm”

“We are going to to say goodbye to the year with very stable and very calm thermal conditions.” Gili assures. He also predicts that, in the next few days, “the skies will be mostly clear with some small bands of high clouds”. The wind will not ruin the tranquil good weather in the Pitiusas either. “Until tomorrow, New Year’s Eve, and throughout January 1st, gusts of wind from the southwest are expected, but it will be light to moderate, not very intense,” says Gili

Higher than normal temperatures for winter

“Temperatures are quite high for it being winter. Rain is not expected for the next few days either”, points out the spokesman of Aemet Balears. Temperatures in the Pitiusas will range between 10 and 19 degrees tomorrow on Ibiza and between 14 and 18 degrees on Formentera. Night-time temperatures, according to the Aemet, will be between 10 and 14 degrees. “Normally, we would see minimums below 7 degrees,” Gili points out. On the other hand, daytime temperatures will be high in the Pitiusas. “On January 1st, it may reach 21 degrees,” says the spokesman, who says that the usual temperature would be around 15 degrees. “The humidity has been quite high during the first part of Christmas,” according to the expert. The Pitiusas have suffered gusts of wind from the southwest. However, this situation does change on New Year’s Eve, which will be “somewhat drier,” he says.

The warmest day so far this winter on Ibiza was December 24th, when 22.7 degrees was recorded in Vila. “I don’t think this value will be exceeded in the days we have left. We will be above 20 degrees but we won’t reach 24,” points out the expert. On Formentera, the hottest day was December 12th, with 19.6 degrees. As for the lowest temperature in the Pitiusas, it was recorded on December 28th in Sant Joan, a day when the mercury dropped to 4.1 degrees. “In summary, for Ibiza and Formentera, there is an anomaly for the whole month of 2.5 and 3 degrees above what we would normall see for the month of December, leaving very warm days,” stresses Gili, who indicates that “it is a very significant anomaly considering that we come from a whole year with very high temperatures.” The expert is sure that, when the 2022 is summarized, “it will be classified as one of the warmest years”.
