December was a warm month on all the islands, with an average temperature of 12.6 degrees in Ibiza and 14.1 in Formentera (the highest in the Balearics) and a thermal anomaly of 0.8 degrees on both islands, rising to one degree in Mallorca and Menorca, according to data released by the State Meteorological Agency in the Balearics (Aemet). In Ibiza, the maximum temperature reached 26.8 degrees (the highest in the archipelago) and was recorded in Sant Joan on the 12th. The maximum reached in Formentera was 20.7 degrees on 10 December. In Mallorca the mercury rose to 26.6 degrees and in Menorca it was 22.6 degrees, in both cases on 12 December, which was the warmest day of the month on the islands.
The average maximum temperature in December in Ibiza was 18.2 degrees Celsius (when the reference is 16.3), the highest in the Balearic Islands.
The highest minimum temperature of the month was recorded in Mallorca (Banyalbufar) on December 12, 16.2 degrees. In the case of Ibiza, the highest minimum was marked in Sant Antoni on the 1st, with 14.9 degrees, and in Eivissa, on the 10th, when the thermometer did not drop below 15.7 degrees.
On the contrary, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded on the 26th with 0.2 degrees in Sant Joan and on the 27th in Formentera, with 5.2 degrees. Escorca, in Mallorca, recorded the lowest minimum of the month in the islands, -3.2 degrees, on the 19th.
December was very dry in the Balearic Islands: on average, it was the third driest December since 1961: it rained 8.1 liters per square meter, when the normal is 64.9 l/m2, which represents 88% less. In the case of Formentera, the month was extremely dry and it is the island with the least rainfall, as only 2 l/m2 fell, when the normal is 38.5, i.e. 95% less. In Ibiza, the month was very dry and 5.3 l/m2 were collected, compared to the usual 57.4 liters, so it rained 95% less than the amount considered normal derived from the historical record. The pluviometric character ranges from very wet, wet, normal, dry and very dry, according to the quintiles of the average monthly rainfall for the period 1991-2020, as explained by the Aemet. As for the wind, the maximum gusts were recorded on the 13th, with 106 kilometers per hour in the Serra d’Alfàbia in Mallorca and 67 km/h at the airport of Ibiza, where there were only five days of strong wind (the usual is seven). December was not very windy in the archipelago.
