Aemet forecasts warmer autumn with normal rainfall for Ibiza and Formentera

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has considered that, most probably, in the Pitiusas, in the next trimester higher than normal temperatures will be recorded and the amount of precipitation will be usual.

As highlighted by the Aemet in a statement, autumn will begin on Sunday, September 22 and will last until Saturday, December 21.

In this quarter it usually rains an average of 180 liters per square meter (l/m2) in Ibiza and 130 l/m2 in Formentera. The predictions indicate that the most likely is that it will rain around that amount, Aemet has pointed out.

Hot and rainy summer

About the summer, it has been hot in the Pitiusas, with two heat waves and an increase of tropical and torrid nights in Formentera. Specifically, the average temperature in Ibiza has been 25.4 degrees and 25.8 degrees in Formentera, with anomalies with respect to normal values of 1 and 0.7 degrees, respectively. All months have been warmer than normal and September is also very warm.

Regarding heat waves, in Ibiza there have been two, one from 29 to 31 July reaching 39.2 degrees and the second from 6 to 11 August, reaching 38.9 degrees. These values were recorded in Sant Antoni. In Formentera, the highest temperature of the summer was 34.1oC on July 21.

During the summer there has also been an increase in the number of tropical nights, both in Ibiza and Formentera, with 67 tropical nights recorded at Ibiza airport being 56 the usual. Therefore, the increase is 20 percent. In addition, three nights were torrid.

In Formentera there have been 70 tropical nights, being the normal 64 (9 percent more), of which 14 have been torrid. Thereforetherefore[]the number of torrid nights on this island has also tripled.

In Ibiza, the summer has been rainy on average, with 73 percent more rainfall. If the normal rainfall is 30 l/m2 during this season, this year there were 52 l/m2. However, in Formentera it has been dry with 13 l/m2, 44 percent below normal. In Ibiza, June and August were rainy and July was dry. In Formentera, all three months were dry.

During the season, the number of days that it rained mud doubled, with eight days compared to the usual four. The main precipitations of the quarter were due to the Isolated High Level Depression (DANA) that affected the archipelago on August 14, 15 and 16.

Although the summer has been normal as far as strong winds are concerned, the strongest gusts of the quarter were recorded on the 14th, associated with the storms that affected Ibiza and Formentera. At the Airport reached 89 kilometers per hour (km / h), a value never recorded before in the month of August, and Formentera is estimated to have reached between 100 and 120 km / h and as a result many anchored boats were dragged.
