During July, private jet traffic in Ibiza increases, with over a hundred flights each day

Last year, the Ibiza airport handled 14,281 private aircraft, a 26.6 % increase over the previous year

Diario de Ibiza reported in November that es Codolar terminal in Ibiza had received more jets from January to September than in any year since 2011. In particular, in the first nine months, it handled 12,307 private aircraft operations (between landings and takeoffs) with 31,559 people on board, topping the previous decade’s annual totals.

Final results show that this industry had its best year ever in 2021. No less than 14,281 procedures were carried out throughout the course of a year, although the majority of them occurred between May and October, corresponding with the tourist season and the high seasonality created by this industry in the economy of Ibiza and Formentera islands.

This statistic reflects a 90.6 % rise over the amount recorded a year earlier, in 2020, when the coronavirus-caused health crisis erupted in all its ferocity.

It happened in mid-March, after being on high alert for nearly three months, and caused massive havoc in society and corporate activities of all types.

In 2020, there were 7,491 operations of this sort of private aircraft, whereas a year earlier, in the final year of the old and misnamed ‘normalcy,’ the Ibiza airport’s lone runway welcomed 11,284. This is a 26.6 % decrease from last year, with 2,997 fewer flights.

Finally, the controllers at the es Codolar tower oversaw the passage of 13,558 private aircraft in 2018, which was 5.3 % less than the previous year, with a loss of 723 operations.

All of these exercises are focused on the summer season, and as in the summers of 2018 and 2019, the highest number of flights were detected last year in July, maintaining a dynamic that, according to how tourism works in the islands, should shift to August, when there is traditionally more movement.

In July, the lone runway available for landings and takeoffs at es Codolar handled a total of 3,103 jet flights.

Last July, for example, the lone runway accessible for landings and take-offs at es Codolar handled a total of 3,103 jet flights, the highest figure ever recorded. This equates to at least one hundred private jet flights every day, not including scheduled and charter operations.

August had the second-highest private jet traffic in 2021, with 2,280 operations and a daily average of 73 flights. It was followed by June, with 1,996 movements and a daily average of 66 flights, and September, with 1,996 movements and a daily average of 66 flights (1,579 landings and takeoffs and an average of 52 jets per day).
