The 2021 tourist season in Ibiza has begun to mend the deep scar in the Pitiusas tourism industry inflicted by the coronavirus. However, the recovery has not been consistent, either in terms of types of industry (restaurants and nightlife have been heads and tails) or in the behaviour of tourist issuing markets.
A look at the statistics data offered by Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) allows for numerous thoughts. The most striking was to be expected given the UK’s extreme travel restrictions, which it has imposed and may continue to impose on its citizens: Ibiza has lost 7/10 British tourists since 2019, when 1,924,989 travellers from this country came or departed from es Codolar airport. This year’s total falls by 71.2% to 554,390 travellers.
The second conclusion is encouraging: despite the health crisis, the home market continues to respond. Despite a 32.9% drop, it surpassed 2.2 million travellers, compared to 3.3 million in the pre-pandemic year.
The third traditional market for Pitiusas, Italy, has also experienced significant deflation
This section also has regular transportation, both to and from the mainland, therefore the number of tourists is fewer.
The third traditional market for Pitiusas, Italy, has also experienced significant deflation. This year has brought 399,406 travellers, up 53.9% over last year’s total of 867,331. As a result, it drops to fifth place in the passenger rating at the terminal, below Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany.
