Ibiza airport recovers its pulse in January

The number of passengers through Ibiza airport is almost three times higher than in the first month of last year.

Ibiza airport starts the new year with good numbers. The first month of 2022 has closed with 144,202 passengers, counting arrivals and departures, a figure still far from the precovid era but representing a significant increase of 181% over the same month last year, the first of the ‘new normal’.

Airport traffic in the month of January is usually not particularly relevant for the analysis of the annual behavior of the air traffic in the facilities of Codolar, managed by Aeropuertos Nacionales y Navegación Aérea (AENA). But on this occasion,  the importance of the impact of covid is reflected: this year 144,202 passengers have been counted, in January 2021 the figure was just 51,312, almost three times less.

According to AENA statistics, last year began with the Pitiusas at a level three health alert, with curfew at night, the interior of bars and restaurants closed and transport at half throttle. But a year earlier, in 2020, the virus had not yet shown signs of life; then, traffic in January was 181,080 travelers, 5.2% more than in the same period of 2019 (172,848 passengers) and 20% more than in the first month of this year.

In 2019 and 2020, Ibiza airport closed the first month of the year with the same growth of booked passengers of 5.2%. Had this trend continued over the last two years, January would have closed with approximately 200,500 passengers.
