Sport and active tourism take off on Ibiza

Ibiza is making space in the national and international calendar for a variety of different sports. More and more people are choosing the island to take part in competitions.

The island of Ibiza is not simply designed for the summer and for visitors who arrive in the middle of the summer season in search of leisure. Ibiza is the ideal place to enjoy doing sport, of any kind, which has been proven in recent years.

Ibiza is home to an endless number of sports competitions of various kinds and specialties, which make a sporting event become a holiday experience that combines relaxation, competition and enjoyment. All in one.

An example of this is the recent celebration of the Santa Eulària Ibiza Marathon, with 4,000 bibs covering different distances: 12k, 22k and 42k. A race that has become a must for running lovers and is included in the calendar of the most competitive and demanding.

In addition to the three distances, the Santa Eulària Ibiza Marathon offers the possibility of running the 21k relay, which will make the combination of enjoyment and sport even more achievable, if that’s possible.

In addition to the runners, in recent weeks the island has also hosted the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB. An event that, after the pandemic, has returned with more enthusiasm and stronger than ever.

A thousand cyclists enjoyed three days on two wheels, three stages for the brave and thousands of kilometers ahead that cross unique landscapes of the whole island: from the city of Ibiza to Sant Antoni, passing through Santa Eulària or Sant Josep.

In both competitions the routes are studied and designed for the participants to enjoy rural roads, enviable views and a magical environment that remains etched in the memories of all athletes.

Sailing and the sea are inextricably linked to the Mediterranean island. The Ruta de la Sal, one of the most important offshore regattas in the Mediterranean, which links the ports of Barcelona or Denia with the island of Ibiza, is another of the essential events for lovers of sailing, winds. An event with Ibizan roots.

Such is the island’s potential as a sports destination that this year Ibiza has hosted the ILCA 4 Spanish Championship, with more than 400 sailors, and the Spanish Sea Kayaking Cup, organized by the Santa Eulària Yacht Club and the Balearic Canoeing Federation, giving thousands of participants the opportunity to discover the island’s gastronomy and cultural heritage while competing to improve their results.

Other sports events

Although in summer the sporting events take a break, they will return from September and October, a time when you can enjoy the island in all its splendor with the good weather that reigns on Ibiza for most of the year.

The Vuelta Cicloturista a Ibiza Campagnolo 2022, over four days will return in early October, converting Ibiza into the epicenter of cycling tourism, besides being the only stage race in Spain that combines leisure and recreational routes with small doses of competition.

The Ibiza Trail Marathon, scheduled for October 15, or the Ibiza Half Triathlon on October 23, are other sporting challenges to be held on the island this year.

Looking ahead to next year, the 10K Ibiza-Platja d’en Bossa must make a mention. An international event that has one of the fastest circuits in Spain and is included in the RFEA and World Athletics calendar.

Ibiza thus becomes a destination that combines sport, nature, relaxation and enjoyment for all those interested, regardless of their physical fitness.
