Patient quotas per doctor in Primary Care reduced by 20% in the Pitiusas Islands

The Health Department highlights that 2023 closes with three times the number of doctors hired than those leaving the profession.

The Pitiusas Health Department yesterday highlighted in a statement that the year will end with three times the number of doctors contracted compared to terminated contracts and with 20% lower patient quotas in Primary Care. The hiring of professionals has made it possible to for each doctor to manage about 1,770 patient cards, when before this expansion of staff the figure was above 2,000 patient cards per doctor. The reduction represents 20% less patients per doctor.

As reported by the Health Department, in relation to permanent and interim contracts, 14 physicians have left this year while 43 have been hired. The figure is higher if temporary and replacement contracts are included, as 249 physicians have been hired under this type of contract, compared to 43 departures. Among other examples, four emergency physicians and a pediatrician were hired, bringing the total number of medical staff to eight professionals.

As for Nursing, in 2022, more than 130 nurses (108 nurses and 32 midwives) and fifty nursing care technicians were recruited through interim and permanent positions.

From October 2020 to present, the Health Department has recruited more than 200 permanent positions after holding competitive examinations for various categories and specialties. In addition, the physician and nurse patient quotas have been reduced with an increase in the Primary Care staff.

Eight new positions have been created, which have made it possible to reduce the quotas of doctors in health centers and thus increase the accessibility of users to the primary level of care.

On the other hand, 17 positions that until now were temporary have also been consolidated, converting them into permanent positions.

This measure has also allowed the Formentera Health Center to have six permanent doctors on staff for the first time.
