The Board of Directors of Ibiza and Formentera‘s environmental organization GEN-GOB has presented its yearly prizes for the worst and best environmental management or project in the Pitiusas area. Six Senses Hotels Resorts in Ibiza receives the Formigó 2021 award for “destruction of the environment and culture of Ibiza and Formentera” for “invading the public maritime land domain to change an emblematic area cherished by the local population into a sea of concrete.”
“In short, for their dishonest approach in filling their mouths with good words while their deeds do nothing but damage unique areas and natural treasures,” according to the press statement.
In justifying this prize, GEN-GOB makes a direct reference to numerous institutions that, in their perspective, “are guilty for burying the scenery of the north coast of Ibiza beneath cement with an aggressive action disguised as a reform.” This urban development operation was carried out “with the complicity of the mayor of Sant Joan, his government team, and the Consell Insular de Ibiza,” according to this environmentalist organization.
The Savina Award in Ibiza
On the other end of the spectrum, the GEN-GOB has given the Associació Maritima-Cultural d’Ibiza i Formentera the Savina 2021 prize in defense of the Pitiusas’ maritime heritage, “for its trajectory and effort in the consolidation of an excellent project.”
The proposal entails the establishment of a floating museum and a center for the interpretation of marine history.
