Unemployment plummets by 48.7% due to the increase in permanent seasonal workers

Unemployment data: in the Pitiusas there are 3,493 people registered in the SOIB lists, 3,321 less than a year ago, the best data for these islands since 2005 in January, while the number of contracts remains practically the same as 12 months ago.

The Pitiusas began the month of February with only 3,493 unemployed, 48.7% less than a year ago. There are, in relation to the same period of 2022, a total of 3,321 fewer Pitiusas residents registered in the SOIB lists. This is the best data in history for that month: it is necessary to go back to 2007 to find the second best unemployment figure (6,664), which is still double the current figure.

The reason for this notable reduction is, once again this month, the increase in the number of permanent unemployed (who are not counted as unemployed) following the modification of labor legislation, which in practice makes temporary contracts more difficult.

By islands, Ibiza had 3,374 unemployed at the end of January, 48.5% less than a year earlier (3,175 less unemployed). Formentera, meanwhile, only registered 119 people without work, 146 less than in the same month of 2022 (-55.1%). These are the best data in the Balearic Islands, where Mallorca reduced the number of unemployed by 31.3% and Menorca by 47%.

In January, 3,340 contracts were signed on Ibiza, only nine more than a year ago ( 0.3%), and on Formentera 134, 11.3% less (-17). On the rest of the islands, hiring also decreased (Mallorca, down 8.9%; Menorca, down 8.1%) as a result of the increasing number of permanent employees.

This has been the reason that for the hotel industry on Ibiza, unemployment has fallen by no less than 64% year-on-year, while in commerce it has fallen by 44.3%. In construction, where there are only 462 citizens without work, the drop has been 40%.

The conseller of Economic Model, Tourism and Labor of the Balearic Government, Iago Negueruela said yesterday at a press conference that these are “very important figures that have broken many stereotypes this year on liberal thinking about how employment should be”. The conseller believes that it has been demonstrated that “the model can be based on the quality of employment”, while “the PP said that the Labor Reform was going to generate unemployment”. Negueruela linked this commitment to quality to an improvement in wages: “The figures prove us right,” he said.
