The Balearic Govern‘s regulation to put an end to the so-called ‘binge tourism’ came into force in 2020, although the pandemic meant that its effectiveness was diluted as most of the hotels remained closed and the volume of tourists decreased dramatically. One of the elements of this law is the limitation of alcoholic beverages to six per day in the all-inclusive hotels of Sant Antoni, on Ibiza, and in Magaluf, Playa de Palma and s’Arenal, on Mallorca. In addition, happy hours and ‘2 for 1’ offers on drinks are also prohibited in these same areas.
But the season has just started and now the implementation of the decree is beginning to be noticed.
The British Mail has published a news item echoing the complaints of a 42-year-old tourist in a hotel in one of the areas affected by the regulation on Mallorca.
In the article, the annoyed tourist claims that he was unaware of the Govern’s new law and that once in his all-inclusive hotel, he was unpleasantly surprised to discover that he could only order six alcoholic drinks per day, three at lunch and three at dinner.
In January, the company Easyjet had already warned all tourists and its potential clients who were planning to book their vacations in Sant Antoni of the new limitations they were going to find.
The decree affecting tourists
The Govern’s regulation against ‘binge tourism’ covers five main areas affecting tourists.
Alcohol
Advertising aimed at encouraging alcohol consumption in tourist establishments is prohibited, as well as open bars, happy hours or similar. It also prohibits the display of alcoholic beverages, self-dispensers, and establishments selling alcohol must remain closed between 9:30pm and 8am.
‘Balconing’
Dangerous practices for the life or physical integrity of persons are prohibited throughout the territory of the Balearic Islands, not only in the territorial scope of the regulation.
Hotels will be obliged to “expel with immediate effect” guests who practice ‘balconing’. In turn, establishments that do not take forceful measures against visitors who jump from the balconies of the rooms into the swimming pool may be fined.
Pubcrawling
Advertising, organization and sale of pubcrawling is prohibited in order to avoid alcoholic tours in the areas affected by the decree.
‘Party boats’
In relation to parties held on boats, the so-called party boats, it is forbidden to advertise them in the areas affected by this decree. On the other hand, this type of boats will not be able to pick up or return clients in these zones. In addition, the granting of new licenses is suspended.
