When we start packing our suitcase for travel, we have to think about the liquids we are going to carry in our hand luggage. The bottles of each of them cannot exceed 100 millilitres.
In addition, when passing through the airport security checkpoint, the following must be removed from the baggage electronic devices and set them aside in one of the trays and the liquids should also be visible in a clear plastic bag.
Well, these limitations are going to end this year, with the implementation of 3D scanners high resolution 3D scanners at Spanish airports. With these devices it will be possible to ‘see’ the contents of suitcases more clearly and detect more easily if any of them are carrying explosives.
These machines are known as eDSCB scanners (Automatic Explosives Detection System for Cabin Baggage). They use very powerful X-rays to create computed tomography scans that produce extremely high-resolution 3D volume images.
This new technology has been tested in several airports in the United States, such as Chicago and Atlanta, and is expected to be implemented worldwide by 2024. In fact, AENA has confirmed its implementation in Spanish airports at the beginning of 2024.
