July starts with 510 fewer sun loungers in the municipality of Ibiza

So far, Vila has awarded another 40 sun loungers next to the Torre del Mar hotel, but 80 have been left deserted in Platja d'en Bossa.

The delay dragging the bureaucratic processing for the beach concessions managed by the Ibiza City Council has resulted in just 20 available sun loungers of the 530 that exist between all the lots during first weekend of July. In addition, Platja d’en Bossa is left with 80 sun loungers less after the tender for two of the concessions was declared void.

After the first awarding decision by the municipal contracting board on May 10th, only 5 of Vila’s 13 concessions have been resolved, 3 of them for water activities and 2 others with umbrellas and parasols. The latter 2 are the ones with the lowest number of facilities of all those in the municipality.

Talamanca

The first batch of sun loungers to be set up for tourists was the one located next to the Argos hotel in Talamanca, which consists of 20 sun loungers and, as is fixed in all these concessions, half that number of umbrellas. At this beach there are another 210 that could be deployed soon.

Thus, the company that opted for the two most important Talamanca lots with 170 sun loungers, has already submitted all the pending bureaucratic documentation, according to the contracting table of the State, and the contract is simply waiting to be formalized. Another concession with 40 sun loungers at the same beach has still not been resolved as the candidate company has not submitted the equipment’s technical data sheet.

Ses Figueretes

At ses Figueretes there are currently 110 sun loungers deployed in the central and narrowest part of the beach, but they are not part of the municipal concessions. This section is managed directly by the Demarcación de Costas and is run by the hotels in the area.

Sunday was the first day of work for the company that operates kayaks and paddle surf in ses Figueretes

In the two large sandy areas of ses Figueretes, with two concessions of 70 and 40 hammocks, there is no trace of them and the processing has not yet been resolved according to the state contracting table. On the other hand, yesterday was the first day of work on this beach for Víctor Alentado, the businessman who has won the lot to run 15 kayaks and 25 paddle surf boards for the next four years.

“Whenever you can start in June is better, but as it is our first year, deadlines always take a little longer,” explained Alentado, who manages sports activities businesses on the beaches of Alicante. In his first season on Ibiza, he will rent kayaks at 11 euros an hour, while paddle surfing costs 1 euro less.

For José Javier Roig, a lifelong resident of ses Figueretes, the absence of sun loungers is “beneficial, in a way”. “Only tourists use them, while we locals prefer to see the beaches clean, not full of sun loungers and with no space to put a towel,” he confessed.

“At least there is more space on the beach without sun loungers. Tourists do want them, but we prefer the natural beach”.

A local couple, Ursula and Francisco, agreed with this assessment while sunbathing at the north end of the beach: “At least there is more space on the beach without sun loungers. Tourists do want them, but we prefer the natural beach.”
