Sant Joan street market suspended

The suspension of the Sant Joan Street Market will be temporary, according to the City Council, and they hope that it will reopen "as soon as possible".

The Sant Joan Street Market has been temporarily suspended, as confirmed by the City Council in a statement. The councilman of Culture, Education, Heritage and Sports, Santi Marí, explained that this decision has been taken while several points that affect the development of the street market are resolved. “The technicians are already working on it and we regret the inconvenience but, in the current circumstances, you can not continue with this activity at least temporarily,” explained the councilman.

On the one hand, the works being carried out in the Escoleta Municipal de Benirràs affect one of the streets where the stalls are located. While the works last, the school service will be moved to the Old Town Hall and the street will be fenced “to turn it into the nursery’s playground,” explained the Consistory.

On the other hand, the City Council is working on a change in the municipal ordinance that will establish the new fees and taxes to be paid by the owners of the market stalls. “We must remember, moreover, that during the covid pandemic the fees were cancelled, but now we are in a different situation”, Marí relates.

Thorough internal reorganisation of the street market required

Finally, the Consistory confirms that the market is “pending a thorough internal reorganization“, as well as a new tender for stalls. In addition, the creation of a new association is currently underway.

“There is no alternative because everything has to be reviewed, from fees to licenses”, explains Marí, who hopes to “reopen this street market as soon as possible”.
