British press suggests alternative destination with fewer tourists

The protests against the tourist overcrowding in the Canary Islands reached Ibiza last Friday with a demonstration organized by Prou! that brought together a thousand people under the slogan of ‘Ja n’hi ha prou’. This sentiment also reached the streets of Mallorca and both protests were widely echoed in the foreign press, especially in the British press, since this is one of the countries that brings more tourists to the Balearic Islands.

Many articles written in the British press speak of an ‘anti-tourist sentiment’ on the islands and have begun to propose to their readers alternative destinations to Ibiza.

This is the case of the Express newspaper, who yesterday published a report entitled ‘The small islands of Europe much more beautiful than Tenerife or Ibiza and with hardly any tourists’.

The newspaper alludes to to the ‘fed up’ of tourists with an increasingly overcrowded Ibiza with an industry centered on tourism and whose pressure has generated a very serious problem of access to housing.

Faced with this situation and the feeling that visitors are no longer so welcome on the island the Express recommends the islands off the west coast of Norway to its readers. “The country, though not famous for its warmth, offers an archipelago with unparalleled views,” writes the journalist.

These are Loftenloften, a group of six islands that extend into the Norwegian Sea. Historically, its residents have been fishermen who have built villages with red houses that have become iconic. Many of these houses have now been adapted to welcome tourists who enjoy the views and the very mild temperatures in summer. The archipelago’s northerly position means that, during the summer, tourists staying in the area experience the phenomenon known as the ‘midnight sun’, with almost constant sunlight between May 25 and July 19.

It is not the first time

The truth is that the British press, shortly before the start of the season, already began to publish a series of articles advising their readers alternative destinations to Ibiza, less crowded and cheaper.

Recently, The Sun newspaper published an extensive monographic report on the Galician coast as the most popular destination in Spain more affordable alternative to Ibizawith cheaper hotel and restaurant prices, even in high season.

Of this northern part of the country, the newspaper pointed out that its “beaches are as wild as the nightlife“, in addition to its outstanding cultural and historical heritage and excellent gastronomy.

He added that Galicians have a reputation for being “big party people,” especially during the summer. “In summer, partying is guaranteed and locals find any excuse to go out all over the region, but no beach clubs and exclusive parties that will leave you in bankruptcy as in Ibiza”, explains the journalist of The Sun.
