The tourists have only spent 91.6 million euros this year in the Pitiusas, 449 million euros less than in 2019, the season before the outbreak of the pandemic, which means a decrease in tourist spending of 83%, according to data provided by Ibestat based on information provided by Egatur, the tourist spending survey.
What happened in May, the first month in which the country was completely (or almost fully) open to tourism, gives an idea of the slow pace at which the season has started: only 69.4 million euros of income were recorded in the sector, 80.2% less than the 350.8 million recorded in the same period of 2019. The absence of Britons is what, above all, weighs down this statistic.
-2.8 MILLION less overnight stays in Ibiza and Formentera
Between January and May a total of 834,091 overnight stays were recorded in Ibiza and Formentera, 2,857,209 less than in the same period of 2019. That is, 77.4% less. In May alone, 1,573,652 fewer overnight stays were recorded, with only 557,151.
124 € daily expenditure in the month of May
The average expenditure per day in the Pitiüses during the month of May amounted to 124.6 euros, 24.3% less than in the same month of 2019.
Spending per trip was 841 euros
Spending per trip also fell, but less, in May, which was 841.6 euros, 97 euros less than two years ago.
To make matters worse, spending per trip has fallen by 10.3%. If two years ago travelers spent an average of 938 euros per stay in May, this year they spent 97 euros less. Spending per day has plummeted by 24%: from 164.6 euros per day in May 2019, this season it has dropped to 124.6 euros, 40 euros less, a big bite. In other words, not only are there fewer travellers, but they are also reaching into their pockets less.
And how is our neighbour and closest competitor doing? A little better than us. In Mallorca tourist spending in May rose to 352 million euros, almost 72% less (almost 900 million less) than two years earlier, a percentage lower than in Ibiza and Formentera. So far this season, on the island has only recieved close to 600 million euros, 2,322 less (-79.4%) than between January and May 2019. The percentage is also lower than the Pitiuso, but it is still enormous.
On the largest island of the Comunitat Autònoma, spending has improved: in May, each trip amounted to 968 euros, which represents an improvement of 7.2%. And the cumulative average for the year is 909 euros, 4.8% higher than two seasons ago. This is despite the fact that spending per day has fallen: from 164 to 138 euros (-15.2%), which means that the average stay in Mallorca has increased.
