The IbizaPreservation foundation celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2023. In an interview, co-founder Serena Cook and current executive director Inma Saranova reflect on the successes achieved and current projects, as well as discussing topics such as climate change, environmental sustainability, renewable energies and tourism overcrowding.
The pair emphasise the importance of building alliances with all sectors of civil society in order to achieve success. IbizaPreservation has raised almost โฌ4m for environmental projects since its inception, focusing on plastic-free initiatives, the Sustainability Observatory, protection of posidonia and the Ibiza Produce project, while promoting alliances with other entities working on conservation projects. Both Cook and Saranova believe that a social union is required to achieve environmental preservation, which includes the tourism sector.
The foundation has collaborated with businesses and Pimeef to get commitments from the private sector. They also support the idea of limiting tourism through public debate and reviewing data, rather than making it a polarised issue of choosing between the economy and environmental sustainability. The interview highlights that Ibiza is behind other islands on renewables and has a mobility problem, which needs to be addressed.
