Ibiza records second driest winter in 71 years

Winter has been very dry in the Pitiusas. This is indicated by statistics provided Tuesday by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). In Ibiza, the normal values for the whole winter are 135 liters per square meter (l/m²) and this winter only 29 l/m² have fallen. In Formentera, the normal is 91 l/m² and only 35 l/m² have been reached.

In Ibiza, the driest month was december with 5 l/m²followed by January with a rainfall of 12.5 l/m². In Formentera, the driest month was december with 2 l/m²followed by January with a precipitation of 18.6 l/m².

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has also reported on the weather forecast for the quarter from April to June 2024in addition to offering an assessment of the winter 2023-2024. In Ibiza and Formentera, the average temperature for the next quarter, from April to June 2024, is forecast to be higher than normal, i.e., it will be above 18ºC. Throughout the quarter, temperatures will slowly increase until reaching their maximum values at the end of the quarter.

As for rainfall, a normal amount is estimated for the reference period 1991-2020. This average rainfall is usually of 65 l/m² in Ibiza and 44 l/m² in Formentera during the quarter from April to June.

The winter has been very warm with an average temperature of 12.7ºC in Ibiza and 14ºC in Formentera and an anomaly with respect to normal values of 1.7ºC and 1.3ºC, respectively. Maximum temperatures have been above normal almost every day, with the exception of the cold period that was recorded twice in January.

The warmest month was February with an average temperature of 13ºC and an anomaly of 2.2ºC, followed by January with 12.7ºC and 2ºC anomaly. The least warm month was December with 12.6ºC and 0.8ºC anomaly.

The highest temperatures of the quarter reached 26.7ºC in Sant Joan de Labritja. With these figures, it becomes the warmest winter since there are records (1993), with record high temperatures and only one day of frost, when it is normal to have nine. In Formentera it reached 21.4ºC.

The highest minimum temperatures were 17.2ºC in Ibiza on January 15 and 15.8ºC in Formentera on January 16. The lowest temperatures were 0.5ºC in Sant Joan de Labritja and 4.8ºC in Formentera, on January 8.
