“I gave up an amazing job on Ibiza due to lack of housing.”

Roberto Veiga is a young Cantabrian who recently passed the competitive examination to become a port police officer on the island after six months of hard work and preparation but had to decline due to the housing situation on the island.

“A few days ago they called me to offer me a two-year contract as a port police officer on Ibiza, but it was impossible to accept due to the lack of affordable housing” on the island. Roberto Veiga, a young Cantabrian who recently passed the competitive examination after six months of hard work

He is a top-level swimmer and has been combining his studies with competitions. “I studied wherever I could, even on the plane. It was my dream and I’ve worked hard at it,” he recounts.

However, the high price of renting housing on the island has thwarted his goal, at least for the time being. “It was an amazing contract because I could have made practically all the points to become a civil servant,” he specifies.

“My dream would have been to accept the contract that would lead me to a permanent position with the state. There I would meet the 20 points I need,” he adds.

Luckily, he says he will receive a call again to work at the Balearic Port Authority (APB) and hopes that when he arrives, the season will be over and the prices of housing will drop so he can rent one. “I have delayed my goal of fulfilling the interim in a position, but I won’t give up,” says Roberto Veiga.

No housing under 3,000€/month

The situation he has before hi is to ask acquaintances and to search on web portals. He is looking for an apartment for a long stay for himself and the only thing he has found in the middle of July does not go below 3,000 euros per month.

“I have a good salary, if I count the one I would get from the police and the one I would get as a swimmer, but it’s out of my hands. Besides, they are temporary rents and I would have to look for another one at the end of the summer”, he laments in comments to Diario de Ibiza.
