Hotel’s cocaine breakfast rumour inspires new film

Ibiza has been the setting for countless films, books, documentaries and music video shoots. Now, according to the British newspaper The Sun, a new audiovisual project with a hotel in Ibiza as protagonist, is being prepared by the British actor and producer Tamer Hassan.

And it is the stories that have taken place at the Pikes Hotel in Ibiza that will be reflected in this feature film.

According to The Sun, an undisclosed source has explained that the idea is to tell what happened in this establishment during the 80s and 90swhen it was run by its founder, Tony Pike, who died in Ibiza in 2019 at the age of 85. The film “will tell the rich and unbridled story of Pikes, with the colorful Tony forming the basis of the main character,” adds the newspaper.

The crazy story of Pikes

Although it is unknown whether the stories circulating around the Pikes hotel between the 1980s and 1990s are real or mere rumors, the new movie aims to lend credibility to facts such as that Pike himself had a relationship with Grace Jones and George Michael (the Wham singer who filmed one of his most famous music videos at the hotel), that he used drugs with Freddie Mercury, or that cocaine was served at breakfast at Pikes with a bowl of cereal.

It is true that in the early 80’s, when the island authorities were concerned about the news of orgies and drug use in the hotel, it is said that it was Julio Iglesias himself who interceded with the authorities to clean up his image.

The most famous party

Although if there is one star who left his indelible mark on the establishment it was Freddie Mercury, who became a close friend of the founder.

His 41st birthday party was one of the most talked about in the history of Ibiza. It lasted several days and it is said that 350 bottles of Moët & Chandon were consumed and that the firework display could be seen from Mallorca.

There were more than 500 guests, including Julio Iglesias, Grace Jones, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Anthony Quinn, Bon Jovi, Boy George, Tony Curtis, Robert Plant, Naomi Campbell and the members of Spandau Ballet

The reason for choosing the Pikes Hotel for a new film about Ibiza is, according to the source handling The Sun, because the film “is a love letter to the era. Pikes was more than a hotel, it was a character in its own right, with stories that need to be told.”

The Pikes Hotel was sold in 2008 and is still open today with much of the charm with which it first opened its doors in Ibiza. It has very famous parties and tries to recover part of the essence of Ibiza from 30 or 40 years ago by banning, for example, cell phones at some of its events.

Its attraction for some celebrities remains intact. A few months ago the singer Kilye Minogue recorded a video clip in its facilities and last summer Rita Ora gave a surprise performance at the Pikes.
