PSOE attacks the Consell de Ibiza for not taking action against illegal tourist apartments

They recall that internet platforms can be fined for advertising illegal tourist rentals, but that the Consell de Ibiza"continues to look the other way".

The socialist group yesterday criticized that the illegal tourist apartments continue to proliferate on the main platforms “due to the completely insufficient action by the Consell de Ibiza,” said the spokesman of the party, Vicent Torres.

The PSOE recalled, through a press release, that, according to the Tourism Law, Internet platforms can be fined for advertising illegal rentals, but that Vicent Marí’s Consell de Ibiza” continues to look the other way”.

The socialist spokesman criticized that the agreement signed by the Consell de Ibiza with Airbnb, “apart from not working, does not commit the platform to comply with tourism regulations, in particular Article 105 of Law 8/2012, Tourism of the Balearic Islands.” The agreement, they specified, also makes no reference to the obligation to indicate in their ads the registration number for tourist activity, “which Airbnb and other platforms continue to breach, and even exempts them from their responsibility to comply with the law.”

“Consell de Ibiza prefers to sign agreements”

They also reiterated that “Ibiza has a very serious problem because of illegal tourist rentals, which causes problems of coexistence, saturation and lack of housing for residents and seasonal workers”, but the Consell de Ibiza “prefers to sign agreements, instead of forcing them to comply with the law and sanction those who do not.”

In addition, according to the socialists, the Consell de Ibiza has not yet hired the four new inspectors transferred by the Balearic Government last December. “The Consell will spend thousands of euros to hire a private detective company, while it continues without providing the new positions of tourism inspector,” said Torres.

The socialist spokesman said that the four new positions of inspector are “essential” to combat illegal tourist rental and punish owners of apartments and platforms. However, “incomprehensibly, summer has arrived and the Consell de Ibiza has not yet been able to fill the four positions, despite the fact that the transfer agreement is made in December last year,” he concluded.
