This is how the Civil Guard operated during the severe ‘Alice’ storm in Ibiza and the massive nightclub closings

The Traffic Civil Guard deployed an extensive emergency and control operation during the passage of the ‘Alice’ storm and the closing parties of Ibiza’s nightclubs. The goal was to ensure road and public safety during one of the most challenging weekends of the year, due to the combination of heavy rainfall and a large influx of vehicles.

The operation focused on preventing traffic on flooded roads and establishing alternative routes, which helped maintain driver safety at all times, according to a statement from the armed forces. The rapid response of the agents was key to minimising the risks arising from the extreme weather conditions and the poor state of parts of the road network, the Benemérita said.

During the hours of greatest meteorological intensity, the civil guards assisted drivers trapped in their vehicles, signalled and closed four roads simultaneously, and carried out a comprehensive inspection of the road network.

In addition, an Alternative Mobility Plan was activated in coordination with other institutions to maintain traffic flow, especially on access roads to Ibiza Airport, ensuring the island’s air connectivity.

The complex situation caused by the storm was further complicated by the seasonal closing parties of the island’s main nightclubs, which significantly increased both traffic volume and the need for heightened surveillance.

In this context, the Civil Guard carried out alcohol and drug tests and detected numerous administrative offences for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, although no specific figures were provided. Other road safety infractions were also recorded, though their number was not detailed either.

The operation was reinforced with agents from Mallorca and Menorca, in a coordinated effort that the Civil Guard described as “exemplary in terms of inter-island cooperation”.

Finally, the Civil Guard reminded drivers of the importance of exercising extreme caution in adverse weather conditions, checking road conditions before travelling, and maintaining zero tolerance towards alcohol and drug consumption behind the wheel. “Driving under the influence of these substances endangers not only the driver’s life, but also that of all other road users”, the body warned.
