Massive fire engulfs old Carthage cinema in Ibiza: five buildings evacuated

The fire has already been brought under control by firefighters

The firefighters of the Consell de Ibiza have already controlled a fire that broke out at midday in the building of the former Cine Cartago, in the centre of Vila, which forced the evacuation of five buildings, including the nearby school of La Consolación, as per the school’s own protocol, as smoke was pouring in. The warning was received at 11.28 am.

Local police officers have been the first to arrive. National Police and two fire trucks are intervening in the action. The fire has occurred in the old cinema, a five-storey building, although the smoke has leaked and came out through the roof of the building, explained from the City Council of Ibiza.

According to the first information, in the building could be residing several squatters and burned plastics that had accumulated.

A fire truck, patrols of the Local Police of Ibiza and several ambulances of 061 have been displaced to the place.

There have been no injuries due to the flames, but there have been one slight intoxicated by smoke intoxication, who has been attended ‘in situ’ by an ambulance, as reported by 061. It was not necessary to transfer the patient to hospital.

Eviction of the school La Consolación

The people inside the building, which overlooks the via Punica and Via Romana streets, specifically at number 13. Customers of an Eroski supermarket have also been evicted adjacent to the stricken building and air conditioners have been turned off so that they do not take in smoke.

Local Police have assisted with the eviction and have regulated traffic by facilitating access to the area for the necessary emergency services.

The dense smoke has prevented to check the third and fourth floors until approximately 13.10 hours, but there were no people in them.

The fire has been controlled at 12.40 hours. The main concern has been to ventilate the space.

The residents of Via Romana have been able to access their homes around 13.45 hours.
