Aitor Morrás: “We can’t have all land transport on Ibiza dependent on taxis”

The councilman of Mobility for Vila, Aitor Morrás, demands the Consell provide more frequent bus services to alleviate the saturation of the service.

The councilman of Mobility for the City Council of Ibiza, Aitor Morrás, claimed yesterday to the representatives of the taxi associations of the municipality to strive to improve the service to hotels, the port and, especially, to users who request transfers to the hospital or the airport or a service with an adapted taxi. However, Aitor Morrás pointed out that the saturation of the service is due to the overcrowding of the island in high season.

“The debate should not focus on whether we need more cabs or not, but that there is a saturation of visitors. We must consider where the limit of sustainability is on the island and that it needs to decrease,” said the mayor. Thus, he claimed that the Consell should increase bus lines and frequencies, “which are now insufficient and contribute to the collapse of the stops, since we cannot have all land transport dependent on taxis.”

Once putting his opinion on the table, he also spared no reproaches to the taxi drivers for their refusal to implement a biometric control in their vehicles to ensure they do not exceed their working hours. The councilman stressed that this measure would have avoided the obligation to stop 35 cabs a day, while cab drivers criticize that this measure exacerbates the lack of supply.

Also, Aitor Morrás recalled that this summer it was planned to grant 50 more seasonal licenses, an increase that was also rejected by the group: “They refused outright, so now they are not in a position to oppose the stoppage of 35 cabs a day”.

In addition, he reiterated that drivers who refuse trips to the hospital or the airport will be fined, since these demands are registered in the fleet management system. At the moment, the City Council has opened a file for the case of a user who requested a transfer to Can Misses and was rejected by up to five cab drivers, Aitor Morrás recalled.

Queues “in all municipalities”

For his part, the president of the Association of Self-Employed Taxi Drivers of Ibiza Town, Alejandro Cardell, pointed out that queues at cab ranks “occur in all municipalities and clubs, not only in Vila” and that it is “an endemic problem due to excessive tourism”. “If a thousand tourists arrive on a cruise ship, it is not going to be viable for there to be a thousand cabs waiting.”
