“La Calima” brought in with the wind, tinges the skies of Ibiza and Formentera

The wind blowing in the Pitiusas has brought with it sand from the Sahara.

The wind continues blowing on Ibiza and Formentera, although with less intensity than Monday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has deactivated the yellow warning for strong winds, but maintains the medium alert level for coastal conditions until 10am Tuesday, as the wind will blow from the east and southeast, with intervals of gale force 7, and waves may reach three metres in height. On land, the maximum gusts forecast today by the Aemet will be close to 50 km/h.

During the day today, the wind is expected to blow most strongly at midday, decreasing throughout the afternoon to give way to a calmer night. Looking ahead to Wednesday, the wind will ease, although not for long, as on Thursday the forecast is for constant winds of between 30 and 35 km/h with gusts that could be higher. In addition, from Wednesday night and early Thursday morning the rains will return to the Pitiusas Islands, which could be especially heavy on Thursday and Friday, when they are expected to be accompanied by storms.

As far as temperatures are concerned, the arrival of rainfall will cause the mercury to drop. The minimum will drop to 10 degrees on Thursday, five degrees lower than on Tuesday. The maximum will also suffer a slight drop, from 20 degrees expected today to 17 expected from Thursday until Sunday.

Saharan dust over the Pitiusas

The wind blowing from the Levante on Ibiza and Formentera has brought with it dust from the Sahara. The squall Celia, cause of the instability of recent days, is also responsible for the strong influx of Saharan air. The Aemet have reported that during this Tuesday, in addition to clouds, the Pitiusan sky will be covered by a haze known as La Calima.
