Ibiza’s population has nearly doubled in 25 years, rising from 78,867 in 1996 to 151,827 last year

Sant Josep's population has increased by 164% since 1996

Since 1996, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has provided population data. In these 25 years, and as a result of the tourism sector, the 571 square kilometers of Ibiza have undergone a huge demographic increase, rising from 78,867 residents at the time to 151,827 on January 1, 2021.

This is a disproportionate growth of 93.8 % (almost doubling the number of inhabitants), although it is less than that recorded in the municipality of Sant Josep, which has gained 164.5 % in population in these 25 years, rising from 11,841 to 28,299.

Santa Eulària had the second highest growth rate, at 105 %: on January 1, 1996, there were 19,452 individuals on the census, compared to 40,038 on the same day the previous year.

Sant Antoni has added 12,913 residents in this time span, since the INE assigned 14,292 inhabitants in 1996, a figure that last year increased to 27,205. In this situation, it represents a 90.4 percent increase.

Finally, Sant Joan, the municipality with the smallest population on the island of Ibiza, has gained 2,800 residents in the last 25 years, rising from 3,835 on January 1, 1996 to 6,635 on the same day last year.
