While in previous variants and waves, the loss of smell or taste was more than enough to raise alarms, with the sixth wave and the new Omicron variant, the symptoms of a coronavirus infected person and one infected by influenza or a simple cold were very similar, and there was no unequivocal symptom that would help doctors screen beyond a diagnostic test such as an antigen test or a PCR.
