Ibiza and Formentera go wild with Argentina after World Cup win

Hundreds of Argentines celebrate World Cup victory over France at Leo Messi's farewell party

From fury to ecstacy; from exhilaration to dismay; from joy to bitterness; and finally, from fear to the greatest explosion of happiness that many have ever felt in their lives. With this outburst of feelings, with this roller coaster of emotions, hundreds of people lived through the Argentines on Ibiza and Formentera the Albiceleste’s third World Cup, Leo Messi‘s first, a worthy successor of Maradona, and the first for many.

The neighborhood of ses Figueretes, multicultural heart of the Ibizan capital, and also the centre of the Moroccan fans who have enjoyed greatly this World Cup in Qatar, was also yesterday the scene of celebrations for much of the Argentine community on the island.

The asador Can Mario brought together a huge crowd that for three hours went through every imaginable state of mind during a final against France worthy of being immortalized and described as one of the most amazing in history. The result, after another agonizing penalty shootout, turned into a vibrant celebration that lasted for hours and was also moved to other places such as Vara de Rey where the police found themselves forced to cut off traffic.

The loyal Leo Messi followers, and now also of Scaloni, took to Calle Navarra to unleash the jubilation and euphoria of the Albicelestes. Another 100 fans gathered on Formentera. Banners, huge cloths, chants, brass bands and flares adorned the celebrations of a community that wanted this triumph like few others to alleviate the hardships of a country that sees football and its national team as something divine, something beyond this world.

Ses Figueretes, epicenter of the World Cup on the island

As seen with Morocco, the popular neighborhood of Ibiza was yesterday’s scene for following the final and the subsequent celebration of the World Cup title by the community of Argentines on the island. The restaurant Can Mario showed the match on a giant screen and part of Calle Navarra had to be closed to traffic to accommodate hundreds of Albiceleste fans, who celebrated the triumph of Leo Messi’s Argentina with emotion and joy.
