While Germany, with the arrival of cold weather, raises the alarm about the exponential increase of covid infections and the saturation of its hospitals, the Pitiusas is experiencing a very different situation. The incidence recorded is one of the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic and remains more or less stable. It should be noted, however, that this is due to the fact that there are hardly any tests controlled by the Ministry of Health, only those to health workers and vulnerable people, and that those who perform self-tests at home are not obliged to report it.
In the last week on Ibiza 34 coronavirus infections were confirmed (almost half of them in Vila) and none on Formentera, according to the covid viewer of the Balearic Ministry of Health. The numbers at two weeks on the island does not reach 40 cases (37.3) per hundred thousand inhabitants, although it is the second highest in the Comunitat, behind Mallorca, where it exceeds 50 (52.9).
Vila is the municipality with the most infections in relation to its population, 53.3, while Sant Joan is has the lowest indicator: 15.1. Despite having the highest incidence on the island, Vila ranks 18th among the municipalities with the highest incidences in the Balearic Islands, far behind the first, Estellencs, which has 306.7 infections in two weeks, although it should be noted that it has such a small population that only a couple of cases trigger this rate. In fact, if this ranking is ordered by the total number of positives detected, Vila ranks 4th with 16. Very far, in any case, from the nearly 800 cases per week of incidence recorded in the Germany.
Hospitals and covid vaccines
Both on Ibiza and Formentera, the highest incidence is recorded among those over 70, a fact that is not only because they are among the most vulnerable to infection but, above all, because it is the only age group in which, if someone has symptoms compatible with covid, they are tested by the Ministry of Health. In the case of Formentera, the only active cases at the moment correspond to people over 70 years of age, as can be deduced from the data of the covid viewer, since in all other age groups the incidence is currently zero cases.
