Covid on Ibiza: ICUs increase while coronavirus incidence decreases

En las residencias de mayores hay tres usuarios contagiados

The number of covid patients admitted to the Ibiza Intensive Care Units (ICU) has increased in the last week, which has reduced the incidence of covid in the Pitiusas over two weeks although it has registered an upturn over seven days. This is evidenced by the latest pandemic data published yesterday by the Balearic Ministry of Health in its weekly update of the epidemiological situation.

There are currently three patients infected with coronavirus in critical care units, two more than those recorded last Thursday, when the island’s ICUs began receiving covid patients once more after almost a month without any in the weekly updates. These three critically ill patients are the highest number recorded since last March 8, that is, in just over two months.

Covid in the Pitiusas

The total number of covid patients in the Pitiusas at the moment is 25, one more than a week ago. The vast majority of them, 22, are on the ward. The Health Department reminds us that this does not mean that all of them have been admitted for covid, but that the virus may have been detected when they had to be admitted to a hospital for other reasons.

The Balearic Ministry of Health points out that at the moment there are three residents of nursing homes on Ibiza that are infected. In addition, there are seven workers from these centers for the elderly who are covid positive. Ibiza and Formentera are the only islands of the Balearic Islands in which no deaths have been recorded from covid in these seven days.

In the last day, the laboratory of Microbiology of the Hospital Can Misses detected 42 positive coronavirus cases in the Pitiusas, 41 on Ibiza and 1 on Formentera. In the last week, 179 positives have been confirmed in Ibiza and another eight in Formentera.

On both islands the incidence of the virus has been reduced in the last week, especially on Formentera, where it has gone from 307.5 infections per hundred thousand inhabitants two weeks ago to 213.5. It should be noted, however, that due to its small population, one more or less case can greatly alter the incidence.

Ibiza now has an incidence of 232.5 infections, five points less than a week ago. Both remain as the islands least affected by covid in the Balearic Islands, although now all are very evenly matched.
