The opposition charges against Alberto Garzón for his words in ‘The Guardian’ on Spanish meat

The opposition charges against Alberto Garzón for comments he made in 'The Guardian' about Spanish meat

Alberto Garzón, Minister of Consumer Affairs, is involved in a new dispute over the livestock-meat sector, claiming in an interview with ‘The Guardian’ that enormous farms “pollute the soil, water, and then export this poor quality meat of such abused animals.”

This is the statement in the declarations to the British newspaper that has sparked the most debate among the livestock industry, the political class, and even internet users, who have elevated this subject to the top of the list of the day’s leading trends on the social network Twitter.

The interview with the minister was released a few days ago, but the sector has only now reacted, after the controversy was fueled after the president of the Junta de Castilla y Leon, Alfonso Fernandez Mañueco, also condemned the “new” attack on farmers from the “Government of Spain” on Twitter.

The minister responded to the tweet by guaranteeing that large livestock practiced in places such as “Asturias, part of Castilla y León, Andalusia, and Extremadura” is environmentally sustainable. Alberto Garzón added: “Mr. Mañueco, on the other hand, is desperate for extreme-right voters and hence resorts to lies and lobbying manipulation. I hope he corrects it “.

Last summer, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs launched a campaign urging people to eat less meat for health and environmental reasons, a recommendation that has been part of the public discourse since 2015, when the World Health Organization (WHO) encouraged people to consume less meat.
