The Pitiusa Health Department yesterday announced the death of an 84-year-old man with coronavirus. This is the 76th death of the pandemic so far this year and the fourth victim of the virus in less than a week. Like the rest of the last four deceased, the man had previous health issues.
The fifth wave has also led to a rise in the number of hospitalisations, which has already forced the Can Misses Hospital (most of those hospitalised by the Pitiusas coronavirus are admitted to this centre) to open a new ward for the treatment of patients with covid, as published yesterday in this newspaper.
Now the increase in hospitalizations of patients in critical care units has led to Can Misses to have to start to refer patients to the Mallorcan hospital of Son Espases. At the moment, one patient has already had to be transferred, according to the Pitiusa Health Department. This body explained that the maximum capacity of the ICU for patients with coronavirus is nine people, while it has six beds for critical patients with other health issues.
In this case, the saturation of the critical care unit of the hospital is due to the increase in admissions of patients with Covid. In the hospital there are currently eight patients in the ICU, which added to the patient admitted in Son Espases and the only occupant with Covid in the ICU of the Policlínica del Rosario, bringing the number of critically ill patients in the Pitiusas to ten. The number of patients staying on the ward has also increased, and now stands at 63, compared to the 59 registered the previous day. In total, there are 73 hospitalised, five more than the previous day.
