How much is the owner of Mercadona worth?

Mercadona's Juan Roig's net worth is astronomical, but ten times less than Amancio Ortega's.

According to the Top Brands in Spain 2022 report, Mercadona is the most influential brand in the Valencian Community. The supermarket chain owns a retail empire of 1,356 stores and is present in 47 provinces and 16 of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities.

The company also prides itself on its large number of employees, around 63,500, who enjoy the company’s benefits and 66% of whom are women.

Its profits are huge, but what is the net profit of its owner? Valencian businessman Juan Roig, 73, is the executive chairman and largest shareholder (with a 55% stake) of Mercadona, which was founded in 1977 by his parents, who at the time aimed to expand their Meat Roig group abroad.

How much do Mercadona employees earn?

Roig was immersed with the ins and outs of the family business from a young age, and during the previous financial crisis in Spain, he cut prices by 14% to help families get through the toughest economic times. That strategy earned the chain a 22% market share, the largest of any grocery store.

With all that data, it’s easy to think how dizzying profits can be.

According to an online portal dedicated to calculating celebrity salaries, Juan Roig would amass a net worth of almost 5 billion euros. If it is difficult for you to calculate the magnitude because you still have the reference of pesetas engraved in your head, it would be 829,267,824,000 pesetas. Approaching what would be one million million pesetas.

And if you think that is an astronomical figure, you would have to multiply it by 10 to reach the fortune of the owner of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, which is estimated at almost 51 billion euros.
