The Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera (MAEF) is opening the temporary exhibition ‘Principio vital: Cรกscaras de huevo de avestruz en Ibiza’ this Friday at 7pm, dedicated to these pieces that always attract the attention of visitors to the centre.
“Phoenician-Punic ostrich eggshells are some of the most genuine and exceptional objects to be found in the MAEF collections. Interpreted as a bridging element between the living and the dead, their decorations in red ochre (with plant or symbolic elements) speak to us of rebirth after death”, said the MAEF through a press release yesterday.
This exhibition will allow visitors to enjoy some very unique objects and that, despite their relative fragility and the vicissitudes suffered during their burial in archaeological sites, have managed to survive the passage of time, sometimes in a state of preservation that can come to surprise visitors.

The exhibition shows little-known aspects of the study of their production and decorative processes, at the same time incorporating the latest findings and showcasing to the public the restoration and conservation techniques used. Visitors will be able to see reproductions made on original materials (modern ostrich eggshells) as well as 3D models made on archaeological pieces from the MAEF.
