Concerts on Ibiza: Jornadas Flamencas de Sant Josep welcomes Martirio as first class guest

Jornadas Flamencas de Sant Josep will be held over three days, from July 1st to 3rd, with lectures, concerts and shows at the Auditorium des Caló de s'Oli.

The Auditorium des Caló de s’Oli de Sant Josep will next weekend, from July 1st to 3rd, host the first Jornadas Flamencas de Sant Josep, in which performances by the genre and its fusions’ great artists will be interspersed with lecture-concerts to discover the richness of this musical heritage. The singer Martirio and her son, the guitarist Raúl Rodríguez will be the headliners.

“In Sant Josep we remain committed to musical culture in all its breadth and we do not neglect any genre. We lacked a program dedicated to a style that has many followers and with Jornadas Flamencas we offer three days in which we combine a great lineup of artists with the opportunity to deepen knowledge and learn to enjoy the flamenco sound even more,” explained the Councillor for Culture, Cristina Ribas, yesterday and is confident that the Jornadas Flamencas “will be greatly received”. Admission will be free but it will be necessary to reserve a seat for performances inside the Auditorium through cultura.santjosep.org.

The Jornadas Flamencas will begin on Friday July 1st at 7:30pm inside the Auditorium with the conference ‘Los palos del flamenco. From A to Z.’ by the singer David Pino and musicologist Faustino Núñez. In these sessions that will be held both Saturday and Sunday, the musicians will guide the attendees through the construction of flamenco from the singing and guitar, and will deal in depth with this musical genre and its differences between styles.

Pino has a degree in flamenco from the Conservatory of Cordoba, where he teaches and directs the chair of Flamencology at the University of Cordoba. Among a long list of awards he received the Soleá at the Festival Internacional de Cante de Las Minas de Murcia in 2003. He has performed in Mexico, Japan and widely throughout Europe. Núñez, for his part, has worked with musicians of the stature of Carlos Núñez, Carmen Cortés and Javier Barón. He has been musical director of the Antonio Gades Company and chairs its foundation, as well as being a prolific author and researcher of the genre.

Manuel de Lola at Jornadas Flamencas

After the conference from 9pm it’s the local talent’s turn with a concert by Manuel de Lola flamenco group, with Manuel Jiménez who debuts solo as a dancer. He will be accompanied by Antonio Muñoz on guitar, Luis Amador on percussion, Sandra Zarcos on vocals and Azahara Muñoz.

On Saturday July 2nd, after the second session of the concert-conference by the teachers Pino and Nunez, at around 8:30 pm it will be time to enjoy the ‘Naufragio universal’ presented by Marco Vargas and Chloé Brûlé, a flamenco dance show outside the venue. At 9:30pm it’s time to return to the indoor hall of the auditorium for the recital by Martirio with Raúl Rodríguez, called ‘Travesía’, with a repertoire of copla, flamenco, Latin American song and a choice of songs by Chavela Vargas in tribute to the Costa Rican artist. “From blues to flamenco, from bolero to tango, from copla to swing. The tone, sometimes cultured, sometimes popular, always complicit and heterogeneous, which characterizes the music of Martirio and that, with the instrumental versatility of Raul, they have managed to conquer the public, both in Spain and Latin America, ” explained the City Council yesterday.

The final of the day of Jornadas Flamencas on Sunday July 3rd, the third session of lectures on flamenco styles by Pino and Nunez, will take place from 8pm on the indoor stage, before Raul Rodriguez will pair with a flamenco-fusion assembly in the format of ‘power trio’ and flamenco dance on the outdoor stage. The performance will begin from 9pm to close Jornadas Flamencas, the first flamenco weekend of the summer.
