The owner of the 19-meter yacht ‘Sophia 1’, which is dedicated to the tourist rental and that last Saturday night ran aground on the beach of s’Alga, on the islet of s’Espalmador, in the Natural Park of ses Salines, has two days to proceed with its decontamination, as reported Monday by the Consell de Formentera.
The insular institution indicated that the property must “remove the batteries, fuel and anything that can contaminate the environment”. In this case, the accident takes on more relevance as it occurred in one of the most protected and sensitive areas of the coast of Formentera.
Precisely, sources of the Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment explained that, once the yacht is removed from the coast, a task that corresponds to the property, “technicians of the Ministry will evaluate the possible damages”. In any case, they indicated that “everything indicates that there is no important affectation” in the natural environment, “but this still cannot be guaranteed until we receive confirmation”.
For its part, the Consell adds that it has proceeded to fence off the dune area, also protected, where the yacht is stranded. With this measure, explains the Minister of Coastal and president of the institution, Llorenç Cordoba, “is intended to prevent the curious who come to look at the boat can suffer any kind of accident”.
They also assure that there is a “continuous contact” with the Capitanía Marítima “to coordinate the actions to be carried out”. Cordoba notes in a note that the maritime captain has already contacted the owner of the yacht to remind him that “he has a period of 72 hours to submit a refloating plan”.
