Fire destroys a warehouse with a thousand rental motorcycles in Formentera

The fire broke out at around 3.30 p.m. in a tyre rack when the warehouse was closed, explains the owner.

On Tuesday a fire completely destroyed an industrial warehouse located at kilometre 2.4 of the main road to Formentera owned by the company Moto Rent Migjorn, where some 1,000 motorbikes were stored, according to the owner, Francisco Javier Mayans Serra. On the same site there is also another car rental company, Blue Autos, which had parked cars outside that were removed by the workers of this rental company with the help of neighbours from the industrial area. This is the second fire in just over a month that has broken out in an industrial building. The first was a commercial warehouse belonging to the company Carbónicas Tur, which was engulfed in flames on 14 May.

According to the account of the owner of Moto Rent Migjorn, there was no one in the building where the fire originated. Francisco Javier Mayans, visibly affected and resigned by the incident, he explained: “A worker called me and told me that smoke was coming out of the window, right where we have a shelf with tires. We called the emergency services and they told us that the protocol was already in place”. As he watched the roof of his business collapse, he told this editor: “You can put it up now,” he said [en Es Diari]in Formentera we need more security, more services and more bad luck, because this is something to see; if you don’t see it you can’t believe it, it’s a disgrace. We will continue to fight as we can”.

The fire started at 3:30 p.m when, according to eyewitnesses, a dry explosion was heard inside.

The origin was located inside the warehouse after the explosion of several motorcycles, first, then heard, from the outside, several explosions in succession while the flames gained more strength and a dense column of black smoke visible from much of the island. At that time, the main road PM-820 was cut off.

Almost an hour later after the fire broke out the roof of the building and the front part collapsedwhile in the interior explosions continued to occuras oils and other flammable materials were present. The flames continued to devour the ship until the arrival of a ibanat heliborne brigade arrived and the helicopter began to discharge water over the building to gradually extinguish the flames.

At 17.10 hours the fire was considered to be under controlalthough the firefighters of the Consell Insular were still fighting the flames together with the brigadiers of Ibanat.

The performance of the firefighters prevented the fire from affecting an adjoining house. As the flames developed at high speed, the work of the firefighters was focused on preventing them from passing from the building to this house and evacuating the rest of the nearby houses for safety.

No personal injuries were reported except for one of the firefighters, who was slightly injured and had to be treated by SAMUR.

The following participated in the extinguishing tasks nine firefighters with two fire engines and two light vehicles, seven Civil Guardsmen, five Ibanat personnelone helicopter and a firefighting technicianin addition to neighbors who collaborated in the removal of cars and motorcycles that were outside.

The road reopened at 19.10 hours, while the tasks to refresh the area continued and the guard was organized to extinguish outbreaks that could occur during the night.
