UD Ibiza pass the test in Brea

UD Ibiza aka "Celestes", with many changes, conceded too many chances but will be in the second round of the Cup

Asturian David Álvarez Davo saved the day for UD Ibiza yesterday with a brace in an uncomfortable encounter against CD Brea, a modest Segunda RFEF side who put up a great fight before succumbing to the Second Division team (0-2). Davo, with a goal in each half, emerged as the goalscorer Carcedo was looking for after coming into the cup tie goal-shy. The islanders did their homework at the Municipal de Piedrabuena and will be in the draw for the second round of the KO tournament.

The Aragonese side came out with a five-man defence against an unrecognisable Ibiza side, with up to eight changes from Juan Carlos Carcedo’s usual line-up. The Riojan opted for debutant goalkeeper Álex Domínguez and chose an attacking line-up with fast wingers such as Miki Villar, Nono and Davo, with the experienced Guerrero up front.

Yesterday’s Celeste opponents were CD Brea, who also made changes with the league campaign in mind, and who hosted a historic match for this small town of just 1,600 inhabitants in the province of Zaragoza.

Dani Martínez’s men were not shy in front of their home fans and pressed high up the pitch, keeping the Ibizan side, who were a little disorganised and sluggish in their attacking moves, at bay. The new midfield pairing of Pape Diop and Kevin Appin took a while to get a grip on the situation, and the Aragonese side pushed forward time and time again until the first big chance of the game came when Diego Puig’s free-kick was pushed away by Álex Domínguez. UD Ibiza responded immediately from a set piece with a header from Goldar at the near post that flew just wide of the top corner (min. 17).
