The traffic accident in which two young people died in Ibiza was like this

The off-road vehicle in which they were travelling may have been overtaking on a stretch of road with a continuous line and no visibility

Two young men aged around 25 died early this morning in a traffic accident when the off-road vehicle they were travelling in collided with a rubbish collection lorry on the Santa Eulària road, on the stretch from the Ca na Negreta recycling centre to the junction with the Santa Gertrudis road, very close to the roundabout, according to a press release from 061. Three other people were injured to varying degrees and are in hospital.

According to 061, when the medical staff arrived, they confirmed the two deaths. In addition, a 32-year-old man is in the Hospital Can Misses with serious polytrauma. Another young man of 23 years has also been transferred to the hospital with a less serious condition. A 45-year-old man has been admitted to the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario also in a less serious condition.

The accident occurred before four o’clock in the morning. Apparently, a white Range Rover SUV traveling in the direction of Santa Eulària was overtaking a passenger car when it has met head-on a Herbusa garbage collection truck which was coming down towards Eivissa and was going correctly in its lane.

Although the driver of the truck tried to avoid the collision, the SUV collided with him frontally and at the same time he was hit from behind by the car he was overtaking. All this has occurred in a curved section with poor visibility, so it has a continuous line and a sign prohibiting driving at more than 60 kilometers per hour. Just at that point there was a radar until the road widening work was done.

Apparently, the two deceased are the two young men who were in the front of the Range Rover and the two seriously injured are those who were behind in the same vehicle. The two women in the other car involved in the accident were not seriously injured. The driver of the truck was less seriously injured and has been admitted for observation at the Polyclinic.

Two Advanced Life Support ambulances, one Basic Life Support ambulance and firefighters from the island’s fire station, as well as the Civil Guard, were sent to the scene of the accident. When the medical team arrived, the two young men had already died and the other three injured were taken to hospital after initial care at the scene of the accident. A corporal and five firefighters also intervened, who had to rescue both the bodies of the two deceased and the two injured in the SUV. They have been working until 6 in the morning.

Both the cabin of the truck and the other two vehicles have been completely destroyed, so that in the rescue, which has lasted from 4 to 9.30 am, have had to intervene three teams of Grúas Ibiza roadside assistance. The tow truck has been escorted by two vehicles of the Guardia Civil, which is in charge of the investigation, to an enclosure for safekeeping.

The wreckage of the vehicles has been completely destroyed by the violent collision. The cleaning of the road has caused traffic jams early in the morning.

With this new fatal accident, the roads of Ibiza and Formentera have claimed 17 lives so far this year, which represents a considerable increase compared to 2022, when nine died in the whole year. This figure was reached at the end of June, when traffic fatalities amounted to the same as in the whole of the previous year.
