The storm ‘Ciarán’ in Ibiza and Formentera: orange alert for gusts of up to 80 kilometers and waves of eight meters high

Sea routes and concerts cancelled and two children's playgrounds closed in Ibiza as a precaution due to the storm

Ibiza and Formentera are on orange alert as of Thursday for coastal risks and strong winds due to the arrival of the ‘Ciarán’ squall, which will bring wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour to the Pitiusas Islands from 3 p.m. to midnight, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

As for coastal phenomena, the wind will blow from the southwest, turning to the west at 55 to 75 kilometers per hour, with a force of seven to eight and waves of three to five meters high. The maximum wave can reach eight meters, according to Aemet. The storm will especially affect the coasts exposed to this wind direction.

The friday the yellow risk is maintained by maximum gusts of 70 kilometers and wind from the west and northwest until 18 hours. In summits and capes can exceed 90 kilometers. There is also yellow alert for rough seas until 20 hours, with wind gusts from the west of 50 to 60 kilometers (force 7) and waves up to three meters high.

The firefighters of Ibiza have published in the social network X some safety recommendations during the days of strong winds. Among others, the firefighters emphasize that it is important to remove objects that may fall to the street from high points and secure or pick up other objects that may be knocked over by the wind.

In addition, they also ensure that it is very important not to approach cliffs or similar spaces where there is a risk of falling.

Sea routes cancelled

Baleària has canceled several maritime routes scheduled for this Thursday between Ibiza and Formentera due to bad weather. Thus, it has cancelled the 15.20 hours departure of ecoferri; the 16.25 hours departure of ‘Nixe’; the 17 hours departure of ‘Cap de Barbaria’; the 18 hours departure of ecoferri; and finally, the 20.30 and 21 hours trips of ecoferri.

On the other hand, the company also has cancelled several routes of the ship ‘Ramon Llull’ scheduled for this Friday between Ibiza, Formentera and Denia due to weather conditions.

Diverted flight

In terms of air traffic, a flight from Ibiza has been diverted when it was about to land at Manises airport in Valenciaaccording to Aena, the strong gusts of wind have reached 100 kilometers per hour and have affected this flight, among otherswhich has had to ber diverted to Alicante-Elche Elx airport.

Although so far there have been no incidents due to the squall at Ibiza airport, in other national airports of the Aena network there have already been several cancellations and diversions.

Cancelled concerts

On the other hand, the City Council of Santa Eulària, together with the Festival Commission of Sant Carles, has postponed Saturday’s concerts in Sant Carles due to the high wind alert.

The Consistory, which organized these concerts on the occasion of the festivities, said in a statement that they are working to find the most appropriate dates to move the performances of a tribute group to Mecano, Canallas del Guateke and DJ Local Toni.

The City Council has also closed as a precaution two of the landscaped parks of the municipality: the Parc des Pins de Puig d’en Valls and Can Fluixà, in Santa Eulària.
