Renovation of the Pereira Theater in Ibiza finally resumed after more than 3 years of paralysis

The owner hopes that there will be no further delays but does not rule out the possibility that more archaeological remains may turn up.

Just this week, the construction company Ferrovial Agroman has resumed the renovation works of the historic Teatro Pereira, in the center of Ibiza town, after more than three and a half years. The works were suspended in June 2018 after the license obtained eight years earlier expired due to the delay caused by the excavation of the unearthed archaeological remains, which forced the owners of the property to submit a new authorization. This process has taken three years.

But it has been almost 14 years since the renovation process of the emblematic theater of the city of Ibiza, owned by the Matutes family (Fiesta Hotels & Resorts SL and Matur SL) and that in April 2024 will celebrate its 125th anniversary.

The renovation was started almost 14 years ago and in 2010, when the license was obtained, it was expected to be carried out in two or three years

Sources of the property point out that this long period “does not speak too well in general” of all the bureaucratic burden involved in the property’s renovation, protected by the figure of Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), which was complicated after the discovery of archaeological remains in the stage area and part of the stalls. In fact, when the promoters obtained the building permit in 2010, they planned to carry out the renovation in a period of “two or three winters”.

Now, the new license is valid for one year plus an automatic extension of six months. “We will try to go as fast as possible”, say sources of the property, who warn that there may still be setbacks that can alter the programming. First, if the City Council forces to stop the works during the summer months and, secondly, if more archaeological remains appear. In any case, as the pending foundation area is “much smaller” than the one that has been executed so far, “there is less risk, but it still exists”. For this reason, the owners of the property have avoided setting a date on the possible completion of the works. “There will be no delays that are not strictly necessary for technical reasons”, emphasize the sources consulted, who point out that the property has “always” had “the intention and the resources” to execute the renovation without delay.
