Passengers afected by the ferry collision in Ibiza’s port lament, “We’ve been standing in line for hours without food or water.”

The ferry ‘Ciudad de Mahón’, belonging to the Grimaldi company, suffered a leak in its hull on Sunday when it collided with the quay due to the strong wind while it was manoeuvring to dock in the port of Ibiza, reports the Balearic Port Authority (APB).

The event took place after 12 o’clock on Sunday, August 27when the vessel, which covers the valencia-Ibiza route and had 750 passengers on boardwas docking at the quay. As a consequence of the impact a breach was opened in the hull, but the captain was able to redirect the maneuver and complete the docking maneuver. Neither the passengers nor the crew were in any danger and at no time was a waterway opened.

The maritime captain of the port of Eivissa, Luis Gascónexplained that the ship was blown down as a result of the strong winds, which meant that it could not be controlled. “It is something that can happen in gusty wind situationsthe ship moves involuntarily and may hit a structure, in this case the “south jetty” of the port of Ibiza.

After analyzing the damages, Capitanía Marítima ordered the immobilization of the vessel until it is repaired in portthe work will be supervised before the ship is allowed to sail again.

Meanwhile, these 750 people, who were waiting at the new maritime station of es Botafoc to embark to travel to Valencia, have had to postpone the crossing and will be able to do so this afternoon, at 18.30 hoursin the ‘City of Palma’another ferry belonging to the same company that has been moved expressly to Ibiza to cover the need of transferring the passengers.

Most of those affected were tired and angry because of the wait caused by the crash of the ship against the dock, of which they have received hardly any information for hours.

“We have been there for two more hours without anyone telling us anything.”

One of the people waiting in lines in front of the shipping counter, Miriamcomplained about the slowness of the shipping company to transfer the information about the wait. “We have been waiting since 11:30, because as I have a car we were in the vehicle boarding area. The ship arrived late, it was already 12:45 when it entered the port and it looks like it had a bump. When it was able to dock we were still there for two more hours without anyone telling us anything,” complains this woman from Novelda who was waiting in line with her two-year-old daughter while her husband went to redeem the food vouchers.

“We have been standing in line since 3 p.m. without eating or drinking,” complained Ibon, who comes from Burgos but will stay in Valencia, since he was alone and had not been able to go to redeem the vouchers while waiting to change his ticket.

The one who still had a trip ahead of him was Aitor, who was coming from Donostia and was lamenting that after arriving in Valencia at night he still had six hours of travel by car in the early hours of the morning.
