The ferry ‘Ciudad de Mahón’, belonging to the Grimaldi company, suffered a leak in its hull on Sunday when it collided with the quay due to the strong wind while it was manoeuvring to dock in the port of Ibiza, reports the Balearic Port Authority (APB).
The event took place after 12 o’clockwhen the vessel, which covers the valencia-Ibiza route and had 750 passengers on boarddocked at the pier. No injuries were reported.
The strong wind caused by the arrival of the squall ‘Betty’ has dragged the ship, which has hit against one of the corners of the dock of es Botafoc.
As a result of the impact, a gap has opened in the starboard side of the ferry’s hull, just above the waterline, so no water has entered.
Fortunately, the captain has been able to control the ship and has finally docked at another point of the port of Ibiza, where he has disembarked the passengers and all the vehicles that were traveling on the vessel.
Maritime Captaincy responsible for navigation in the port, has immobilized the ferry until it is fully repaired and fit for navigation, tasks that will be supervised before authorizing its departure from the port of Ibiza.
