Ibiza nightclub ‘Closings’: 6 arrested and nearly 200 charged with drug possession

One of those arrested during the nightclub closing operation was a motorcycle driver who was driving drunk and almost ran over the officers when she tried to flee.

The ‘closings’ of some of the main nightclubs in the area of Platja d’en Bossa last weekend resulted in six people arrested and 193 charged with possession of drugs. The Sant Josep City Council have confirmed that during the special surveillance operation carried out by the Policía Local of the municipality along with the Guardia Civil, five people were arrested for crimes against public health and another who was driving a motorcycle allegedly drunk for fleeing from the agents.

A quiet operation to close the nightclubs

“We must appreciate the good coordination by the two bodies that has allowed a very effective deployment to ensure that this has been a rather quiet operation to close the nightclubs, except for offenders that fortunately the agents removed from our streets before they could endanger other citizens,” said the Deputy Mayor of Governance, Pilar Ribas, as reflected in the statement issued by the Consistory.

From Saturday until Tuesday morning, agents of the two security forces, established several traffic controls and public safety in areas of Platja d’en Bossa nightclubs that had scheduled their closing party. In total, 17 drivers have been intercepted while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Policía Local has described the weekend of the nightclub ‘closings’ as “quiet and practically without incidents outside the usual during these operations”.

On the first day, three people were detected driving under the influence of drugs and six others were drunk, they said. Fourteen vehicles were taken to the municipal depot either for hindering traffic or because their owners were not in a fit state to drive. In addition, 20 reports were issued for drug possession and two people were arrested for a crime against public health. The officers also had to intervene in two minor traffic accidents in which the drivers tested positive for alcohol. During the night of Saturday to Sunday, six other drivers were reported for drunk driving and three others for driving under the influence of drugs. The driver of a motorcycle who almost ran over the police officers who stopped her for drunk driving during her attempt to flee was also arrested.

The second day of the police deployment resulted in a total of 151 reports for drug possession and another three arrested for possession of narcotics. On the road, officers intercepted three other drivers driving under the influence of drugs.
