The medical oncology service at Can Misses Hospital has a new specialist, bringing the number of doctors in the area to six, the centre announced in a press release yesterday. The new addition is Dr Xiana Andrรฉ Vรกzquez, who comes from the Son Llร tzer Hospital in Palma de Mallorca, where she also completed her residency. The specialist has studied Medicine and Surgery at the CEU San Pablo University and at the University of Alcalรก de Henares, both in the Community of Madrid.
With the recruitment of this physician, the Oncology service has been reinforced and now has six specialists. Dr Andrรฉ joins the staff made up of Sergio Sรกnchez -head of the service-, Carlos Rodrรญguez, Iker Lรณpez, Urbicio Pรฉrez, Alicia Quรญlez and the psycho-oncologist Paloma Martรญnez. Her incorporation will allow her to cover the paternal leave of one of her colleagues.

In the first five months of 2021, the Medical Oncology service increased its activity by more than 8%. From January to May, it answered 3,378 inquiries, while in the same period of 2020 there were 3,123, which represents an approximate year-on-year growth of 8.2%. The data point to an intensification of the follow-up work in the treatment of patients, since it is the second consultations or successive appointments that have increased the most, by 8.5%, going from the 2,959 registered in 2020 to the 3,211 that were carried out in 2021.
Meanwhile, the first consultations attended up to May of this year totalled 167, compared to 164 in the same period in 2020.
The manager of the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, Carmen Santos, stated yesterday that “it is very important to attract professionals to specialties as sensitive for the population as medical oncology and thereby expand its staff to increase the quality of care. We have recently also hired two anesthetists,” she explained.

8.2% more consultations attended in the first five months of this year
The Oncology service Mรฉdica de Can Misses experienced an interannual variation of approximately 8.2% in the first five months of the year. The ones that grow the most are the second queries.
Santos said that the Health Department continues to work on adapting healthcare services to the needs of Ibiza and Formentera. “We are focused on completing, expanding and consolidating our staff, which is why we are very pleased with additions like that of oncologist Xiana Andrรฉ,” added Santos, who concluded that “the work of the medical management and service chiefs is fundamental”.

The Balearic Islands is the autonomous community with the highest percentage of immunised population in the 50-59 age group. In the islands, the percentage of people in this group who have already received the full vaccination schedule stands at 66.5%, compared to the Spanish average of 56.4%. However, the Balearic Islands still have a large immunisation deficit in the 60-69 age group.
